Frequently Asked Questions About General and Preventative Dentistry
The most common sign of dental trouble is tooth pain or sensitivity—especially when eating or drinking something hot, cold, or sweet. This can indicate a wide range of dental issues, such as cavities, gum disease, cracked teeth, or exposed roots. Therefore, it is important to visit your dentist regularly for routine checkups to detect, address, and prevent minor problems before they become major ones.
Flossing and using mouthwash help clean the spaces between and around teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach. While they shouldn’t replace brushing, incorporating them into your daily routine is a powerful way to support and maintain your oral health.
Dental X-rays are very safe. We use digital X-rays, which emit a very low level of radiation—often even less than what you’re exposed to during a short flight. We also take precautions, like using lead aprons and limiting how often we take them. ADA and major dental advisory committees recommend dental x-rays every 6 months.
As for necessity, X-rays are a vital tool for diagnosing problems that aren’t visible during a regular exam—such as cavities between teeth, infections, bone loss, or issues below the gumline. They help us catch problems early, often before you feel any discomfort, which can save you time, money, and unnecessary treatment down the line.
Dental fillings are materials used to repair and restore teeth that have been damaged by cavities or minor fractures. When a tooth develops a cavity, the decayed portion is removed, and the space is filled with a material that restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and function.
Most modern fillings are made from tooth-colored composite resin, which blends naturally with your teeth. Other materials like amalgam (silver-colored), gold, or porcelain may also be used depending on the situation. However, our clinic exclusively use resin only due to various reasons.
Fillings help prevent further decay, protect the tooth from sensitivity, and allow you to chew comfortably again.
